Summer 14 Fashion Trends: How To

I wish I could say that I created this, but I did not, so I cannot. And, before you read any further, keep in mind that you can do WHATEVER you want, and wear, whatever you want, and whatever floats your boat. But, if you are unsure, this handy dandy little checklist might help you out. And actually, I could see the double peplum thing actually happening. It would probably have to be a careful undertaking, but it could probably be done. I am not that brave, so its not a trend I will be starting, but let's just wait and see where that goes...

Here's my take on their infographic, with some of my own dos and don'ts:

Cropped tops have been trending for a while, and I guess they are finally hitting their peak. Score one for the body positiv...ists...? Is that a word? Anyway, thanks to the bravery of a few trailblazers (GabiFresh, Nadia Aboulhosn to name a couple), the once-forbidden item of clothing, the crop top, has become a supremely fashionable, and dare I say it, figure flattering piece. I have yet to venture there, but I think I might one day. That post of Nadia's is really pushing me over the edge. So classic and simple, but fashion forward. I think when I first saw that post, I went right to the store to try and find those pants, but I think I am a bit taller than her, and they weren't high-waisted enough. On me, they were the Muffin-top maker. *shudder*

  • Have the crop hit your natural waist
  • Pair it with a high-waisted skirt or pants

  • Wear an ill-fitting crop top. It should not be too tight or too loose. Make sure its just right... like Baby Bear's porridge, chair and bed
  • Pair it with low-cut jeans. That's a whole lotta business... on any body type/size.

I am really glad to see that Jumpsuits and Rompers are on this list. They were pretty big a while ago. I want to say at least 2 years or so ago. I remember, but I researched (I'm a nerd) their trendi-ness pretty hard when I purchased, and wore my first jumpsuit almost exactly a year ago. I thought their time might have been over, but clearly this is the summer of the jumpsuit! I am wearing one right now, actually, a romper, so I DID buy another one. It will feature in an OOTD post to come very soon!

  • Choose a jumpsuit in a good fabric, either one that drapes well, (like my jersey one), or provides a structured look, as in denim, or a heavier weight cotton.
  • Accessorize thoughtfully and appropriately. The right necklace and shoe can make it.

  • Choose a cut that conflicts with your natural shape. Let the jumpsuit be a friend to your body, not a foe.
  • Wear a jumpsuit with a rise shorter than yours. A camel toe and hungry bum (when your butt cheeks are eating your pants) is generally not the desired look.

Peplum is perhaps the best trend in plus-size clothing EVER. In my humble opinion, anyway. I swear not 2 years ago, you couldn't find anything in peplum in plus sizes. I remember seeing it all over Pinterest, and the first time I actually saw it as a plus size offering, I might have shed a little tear. Now its everywhere, on tops, dresses, skirts, even belts.

  • Have the fitted part stop at your natural waist, and then flair out over your curviest part
  • Balance the top with a more fitted bottom. A pencil skirt or fitted capris are a best friend to the peplum top.
  • Double up on the peplum. Granted, as I said, I can almost see this happening as a natural progression, but perhaps thats best left to the professionals. The average Jane is probably safest to go with a single-peplum ensemble.
  • Pick a clingy spandex dress. Then, its not a maxi, its a bodycon. Which is fine, but not if you want a maxi dress...

F*ck yeah Maxi Dresses. Is there anything that screams summer comfort more clearly than a maxi dress? The great thing is, they come in so many cuts and styles, you can, without fail, find a maxi dress that you love. Sleeveless, halter, strappy, the options are seriously endless. I think the only requirement for a maxi dress, is that it is ankle length, and be a loose flowy fit.

  • Choose a maxi in a loose, easy fabric, such as fine cotton, chiffon or light crepe.
  • I call BS on their "choose bold print" Do. I've seen lovely maxi dresses with no print, and with fine prints. Pick what you like. You really can't go wrong on this score.
  • Make sure its the right length. It should graze your instep.
  • Pair it with heels. Wedges are where its at with the maxi dress. There's an easiness to the maxi dress that heels wouldn't match.

So, there you have it. A few of the top trends for this Summer. Its not too late to get on any of these bad boys. Perhaps I'll even get out there and invest in a crop top and high waisted pant. I really really want to...

Are there any of these trends that you haven't tried out yet, but are keen to? Am I the only one afeared of crop tops?
