|Gold accessories and leopard print shoes pair nicely with this cherry red top.|
I have so little true red in my closet. I can't think of why, but I remedied that recently. In my last post, you see that I scored myself some lovely red platform pumps. And then, a friend of mine bought a really nice red blouse, and I thought she looked so smashing in it, that I had to go out and get one for myself. I really like this one that I got from Old Navy. I don't know how to describe the collar, maybe split-neck mandarin? I kinda feel like with a blouse this vibrant, it needs to have some details that set it apart from your typical oxford cut. This one has lovely gathering at the cuffs, and where it joins the yoke.
But, a strong color like red means that you have to make some deliberate choices. You can't just throw on any old shoe. It can be hard to make everything sing together, when you have such a strong note.
That being said, here is my Tip of the Day.
Red outfit? Which shoes?
I used to think black. That was my go-to. However, I've come to realize that black is a little harsh with an ensemble that features a bright red. It can be done, certainly, but only if the other elements in the ensemble mimic that. I posted a side-by-side the other day, of this blouse with this gold necklace, and with a heavy beaded black necklace. Wasn't sure which one looked better with it. Really, the question I posed (A or B) wasn't really a fair one, since I didn't post what else I was wearing with it.
If it had been black slacks, the black necklace and black shoes would have been a good choice, but I knew that I was planning on wearing them with a pair of skinny jeans (which I've come to realise, in the colder months, is like my uniform pants; they're all I wear). For me, with jeans, I think the red blouse with the black necklace and black shoes wouldn't have been the best choice. Certainly not "Oh. My. God. Becky... What is she wearing," or anything, but I much prefer the gold jewelry (red and gold, hello Christmas). And once there is no more black in the picture, black shoes with this would have been plain wrong. So, my next 2 options would be nude / beige, or leopard print. I obviously opted for leopard (to me, leopard is a neutral). Nude would have been great too. I have a red dress that I wear with nude shoes, but never would I wear it with black. Right now, I would feel too Lillith Crane in a red dress with black shoes/accessories.
So, basically, your safest bet with red, or any jewel-tone, really, is nude or animal print. That's my opinion. What do you think? Am I way off base?
UPDATE: Metallics! How could I have forgotten metallics. A gold shoe would be a great holiday party choice. Silver I probably wouldn't do (although silver would look great with a bright blue dress/top).
